Remembering Joey
Join us in the fight against Pediatric Osteosarcoma. Our Purpose
Because of Joey, in collaboration with the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation (NPCF), is a non-profit foundation whose mission is to raise money for research and awareness for a rare and aggressive form of pediatric cancer called Osteosarcoma. It was created in honor of our loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend.
What Is Osteosarcoma?
Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer among children, adolescents, and young adults. It usually occurs in the long bones of the arms or legs, but it can also happen in the pelvis and spine or, in rare cases, the jaw or other locations in the body.
- In most cases, there is no apparent cause for osteosarcoma. However, genetics, abnormal bone metabolism, or environmental exposures are factors in some people.
- The 5-year relative survival rate for osteosarcoma is 60%. If the cancer is diagnosed at the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 77%.
- Osteosarcoma symptoms may resemble other, more common conditions or medical problems.
- Pain (sharp or dull) at the site of the tumor
- Swelling
- Redness at the site of the tumor
- Increased pain with activity or lifting
- Limping
- Decreased movement of the affected limb
- Approximately 600 new cases are diagnosed every year in the U.S.
- It has been 40 years since osteosarcoma has had a new drug for treatment
Joey’s Story
Joey Edwards was a 17-year-old boy who grew up in Pittstown, NJ, Hunterdon County.
When Joey was sixteen years old, he complained that his left leg hurt. We told him to take a break from training and let his leg rest because he was training hard and we felt he was overworking himself. Never a quitter, he instead tried to work through the pain. Shortly after, at the end of a weekend of snowboarding, he again mentioned his leg was still bothering him. It was then we realized something was wrong, because Joey never complained.
On February 14, 2023, he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma of his left femur which had already metastasized to his lungs. He went through nine months of grueling chemotherapy, as well as a major limb saving surgery; all of which he faced head on with his signature smile, never complaining about anything. Unfortunately, the 2 different types of chemo did not work & It continued to spread to his brain, back, pelvic & hip. Together with his doctors, we searched for clinical trials and any hospital that had anything to offer him. Unfortunately, he did not qualify for any clinical trials. Throughout it all, Joey remained positive, with a smile on his face and continued living his life as best he could.
Although Joey lost his physical battle with Osteosarcoma, he passed on his strength, tenacity, & courage to continue the fight for a cure and awareness. Because of Joey is committed to keeping Joey’s memory alive, eradicating Pediatric Osteosarcoma through funding research to treat & decimate this illness!! Joey was such a bright light to us all, and we are honored to continue the fight for him.
A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies.
It brings us together again and again.
